ITC 2006 Awards for Excellence in Distance Learning Honors Dallas TeleCollege History Course.
The "Transforming America" distance learning course, recently was honored with the Instructional Technology Council (ITC) 2006 Award for Distance Learning Excellence at their recent program in Savannah, Georgia. This HIST 1302 course is a college-level course designed to challenge distance learning students to expand their knowledge of U.S. history since 1877 and sharpen critical thinking skills. The course examines events in history through the lens of the themes freedom, equality, and identity.
The interactive course uses discussion boards within a learning management system allowing instructors to set the degree of interactivity they desire to meet course objectives. Course design encourages students to complete each lesson using the media elements assigned, while providing the flexibility to initiate group discussions, synchronously or asynchronously.
Each lesson contains an interactive lesson introduction which mirrors the themes and style of a 30-minute video, two interactive activities specific to that lesson, suggested Web research related to the lesson topic, and pre- and post self-assessment tests. An interactive timeline enables students to place lesson events within the course time period, 1877 to present. Four "Knowledge In Action" projects, one with each course unit, promote student problem-solving skills.
Lessons make extensive use of the histories of seven diverse American families to prompt students' research into their personal family history and their place in the American story.
